The Economics of Happiness
I've always been intrigued by people who are always happy. You know, no matter the circumstance in their lives - they are smiling on the inside and the outside.
Then there are those who allow chronic stress to permeate their lives as if they had no other choice but to suffer from needless tension and anxiety. I have counseled many such people and the majority are what I call "victims of life". In other words they believe, deeply believe, that they have no choice BUT to have life dictate their unhappiness. Oscar Wilde summed this up best when he said, "Some cause happiness wherever they go; others whenever they go."
You've no doubt heard it said that it takes seventeen muscles to smile and forty-three muscles to frown. That physical fact lays the foundation for the exploration of happiness economics.
The happiest people I know are busy people. They are busy with a mission and leading a purpose driven life. In fact, they are SO busy making a difference in the world they don't have time to be unhappy! One of Oprah Winfrey's - of Oprah Lifeclass Show fame - favorite happiness quotes comes from Mahatma Gandhi: "Happiness is when what you think, what you say, and what you do are in harmony."
I've never met a happy person who wasn't leading some level of a purpose driven life. I mean, there is no greater feeling in the world than waking up and deciding what kind of joy and happiness you're going to spread out to others on this great day! Knowing your Life Purpose and actually living it are two totally different things and I might suggest that NOT living your purpose is a root cause of chronic stress and unhappiness!
One of the happiest people I have ever met is my mentor and partner, Julian Kalmar. We founded a humanitarian organization called *10 Million Clicks For Peace in 2006 and we attracted the endorsements of several "change" leaders in the world including a Nobel Peace Prize winner. As a new non-profit, we faced some pretty difficult challenges when the economy took a nosedive two years later but as a testament to the economics of happiness, I am here to tell you this master of happiness maintained a bright, positive attitude through it all that allowed us to survive when many a non-profit couldn't hold on. See, happiness also = success!
Another Oprah Lifeclass Show favorite quote is by Cesare Pavese, "The only joy in the world is to begin."
Now let me ask you these two powerful questions:
Can you afford NOT to be happy?
Can you afford NOT to begin?
Julian and I have combined the concept of happiness economics and discovering and implementing your Life Purpose in a comprehensive, 26-week spiritual program called Modern Day Mastery. This program will be for you if:
